The Restoration of Void

Originally carved into basalt stone layers in the early 20th century, these vaults served primarily for cold cargo and heavy transit storage before falling completely silent.

In 2022, an alliance of structural engineers and acoustic designers initiated a four-year restoration. Rather than hiding the heavy, rough brickwork and deep concrete water stains, we chose to frames them under micro-linear LED accents.

This design approach, where raw brutalist utility encounters subtle, modern glowing copper accents, sets Gallery Tunnelsy apart. It acts not just as a standard neutral background, but as an active physical participant in every installation.

Seismic Structural Safeguards

Ensuring absolute stability within underground chambers beneath an active metropolitan zone required state-of-the-art geo-technical retrofits. Multiple dynamic hydraulic shock dampeners isolate all active gallery surfaces from vibrations produced by street-level traffic above, allowing pristine spatial acoustic and dynamic light mapping loops to process without interruption.

The Architecture Matrix

Our material selections are chosen specifically to complement the humid, high-thermal mass subterranean climate:

  • Board-Formed Concrete: Poured against natural rough fir planks to preserve organic wood grain impressions.
  • Reclaimed Copper Pipes: Natural oxidation reacts with underground humidity, gradually shifting tones from raw copper to structural green.
  • Deep Basalt Flooring: Sourced locally from the Columbia Basin to create a seamless aesthetic integration with the surrounding natural stone.

Utilitarian Excavation

Initial tunnels blasted into basalt strata to create climate-secure shipping vaults and mechanical pathways beneath the Seattle harbor district.

1971

Structural Abandonment

Modern logistics and highway transport patterns make the underground transit storage network obsolete. Vault gates are welded closed, keeping the tunnels completely dark for decades.

2022

The Tunnelsy Project

A full-scale adaptive reuse initiative is launched. Structural retrofits insert low-voltage fiber optic pipelines, climate filtration blocks, and heavy seismic dampeners.

2026

Gallery Inauguration

The space reopens to the public as a highly advanced subterranean art gallery and atmospheric architectural installation venue.
